Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provides an overview of recent research on the various aspects of digital technology that now shapes the financial services and banking sectors. It underscores the integration of financial technology (fintech), blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and many other recent innovations to transform how we view our current processes and future possibilities. This course also covers the importance of transformative adoption in our industries and discusses the relevant policy mechanisms to enable its development.

The first part of the course will encourage students to become acquainted with the history and typology of financial technology, the likely path for the adoption of financial technology, to the emergence of new business models and relevant regulatory policy. The second part of the course will help students to acquire a more concrete understanding of blockchain/distributed ledger technology, cryptocurrency and cryptoassets, as well as decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). On a more practical level, there will be a case discussion on blockchain and a guest lecture session from the industry as well.

This course will incorporate academic scholarly readings to provide the broad framework and theory on fintech and blockchain. This course, however, will not be focusing on application software per se, but instead on how the financial technology and blockchain can serve as a platform that supports products and applications that are relevant for businesses and other users. There will also be a session involving a guest lecture that will share his/her many years of hands-on practical experience in fintech and blockchain in a variety of industry sectors.

Course Objectives

After completion of this course, it is expected that students will:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of fintech and blockchain as well as its application,
  • Appreciate the role of fintech and blockchain in effectively and efficiently transforming the industry,
  • Be more confident and persuasive in their ability to analyze changes, mainly in the financial services and banking sectors, and
  • Be able to make recommendations to executives within the finance/banking industry regarding how to react to these changes.
